Expansion Tank Coolant Recirculation Hose Replacement

  • Materials Required

    • Flathead Screwdriver
  • Overview

The expansion tank coolant recirculation hose's job is to recirculate air-free coolant from the engine into the expansion tank. Over time this hose might leak spraying coolant all over the engine cover as seen above.

  • Loosen Band Clamp

Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the band clamp holding the recirculation hose to the upper radiator hose.

  • Pull Recirculation Hose from Nipple

Once the band clamp is fully loosened, pull the old recirculation hose from the nipple on the upper radiator hose.

  • Unlatch Hose from Expansion Tank

Using a flathead screwdriver or pick tool, pull up on the retention clip holding the recirculation hose to the expansion tank.

  • Pull Hose from Expansion Tank Nipple

With the retention clip unlatched, pull the recirculation hose from the expansion tank.

  • Unlatch Hose Clip 1

Unlatch the recirculation hose from the first fan shroud clip shown above (white arrow).

  • Unlatch Hose Clip 2

Unlatch the recirculation hose from the second fan shroud clip shown above.

  • Remove Old Hose

With all four connecting points/clips removed, remove the old recirculation hose from the engine bay.

  • *NOTE

Due to the high heat the recirculation hose is exposed to, it commonly tears at the fan shroud clipping points. Shown above is the tear that caused this vehicle to spray coolant all over the engine bay.

  • Transfer Band Clamp to New Hose

Transfer the band clamp from the old coolant recirculation hose to the new one.

  • Install New Hose

Install the new hose in the vice versa of removal.

  • Fill Coolant Reservoir and Bleed System

With the new hose re-installed, fill the coolant reservoir to it's max level. Do not overfill. Once filled to max, conduct the cooling system bleeding procedure.

  • Test Start Vehicle

With the cooling system filled and bled, test start the vehicle's engine. Allow to idle for roughly 5 minutes while inspecting for coolant leaks.

  • DIY Complete!

Good job replacing your expansion tank coolant recirculation hose! Be sure to keep an eye on your cooling system in the days after to ensure no other coolant leraks are present.
